About Tule Sacramento Heat Pump
Tule Sacramento Heat Pump offers and manages ducted air-source heat pump installation, gas furnace conversions, replacement, repair and maintenance in Sacramento County, south Placer County, east Yolo County and El Dorado Hills. The HVAC work itself is performed by licensed and insured contractors holding the California C-20 license.
Why the name is Tule
Tule fog is the Sacramento Valley's winter ground fog, the low grey blanket that settles over the valley floor on still, cold mornings. It is named for the tule, the tall bulrush that grew in the old Sacramento marshes.
The name is about the weather a heat pump here has to work through: those damp, near-freezing fog mornings, when the outdoor coil has to heat and defrost, and the 104-degree afternoons a few months later, when the same machine has to cool.
The work we coordinate
Every system on this site is a ducted air-source heat pump, either a split system (an outdoor unit with an indoor air handler or coil) or a package unit, heating and cooling through the building's ducts. A project starts with the house, its ducts and its bills, and ends with a commissioned system and the paperwork for it.
- Furnace to heat pump conversion: One ducted heat pump in place of the gas furnace and the central AC, sized from a load calculation and tested to Title 24.
- Heat pump replacement: An aging heat pump swapped for a matched, correctly sized system, with the ducts tested and the charge verified under Title 24.
- AC to heat pump: A heat pump in place of a failing central air conditioner, with the furnace kept as backup, removed, or replaced by the heat pump's own air handler.
- Dual fuel heat pump: A heat pump added to a gas furnace that still has life in it, with the changeover point set from your utility's rates and the house's heat loss.
- Package unit replacement: A rooftop or ground-mounted package unit replaced with a package heat pump, with the curb, duct connections and Title 24 testing handled in one scope.
- Air handler replacement: A new indoor fan and coil cabinet matched to the outdoor unit, with the drain, filter, backup heat and duct test done to Title 24.
- Heat pump ductwork: Duct testing, sealing, resizing or full replacement so a heat pump gets the airflow it needs and passes the Title 24 test.
- Older homes: Ducted heat pumps for pre-war and mid-century houses, including a first duct system where the house never had one.
- Variable speed heat pump: An inverter-driven heat pump that runs at the output the house needs, sized and set up for Sacramento's heat and SMUD's rebate tiers.
- Commercial heat pumps: Rooftop and package heat pumps for small commercial buildings, scoped around the curb, the lift, the electrical service and the hours the space is in use.
- Heat pump repair: Diagnosis and repair of ducted heat pumps, with a written repair-or-replace comparison when the failed part is a major one.
- Heat pump maintenance: Seasonal checks for ducted heat pumps: filters and airflow for smoke season, coil cleaning, condensate drains, defrost and controls.
Licensed contractor fulfillment
Tule Sacramento Heat Pump sets up and manages each project; the work is carried out by licensed and insured contractors working to these standards.
- Licensed and insured contractors. The installation and repair work is performed by licensed and insured contractors holding the California C-20 (warm-air heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) classification, with a C-10 electrical contractor for panel work. Any license number can be checked with the Contractors State License Board.
- Room-by-room load calculation. Equipment is sized from a Manual J load calculation for the house, built on the design temperatures the California Energy Commission publishes for the area, so it is sized for the hottest afternoons and the coldest mornings rather than from square footage or the size of the old unit.
- Ducts tested and sealed. Under California's Title 24 energy code, installing or replacing a heat pump's outdoor unit triggers duct sealing, and the ducts are tested by the installer and verified by an ECC-Rater. The test result belongs in your closeout papers.
- Permits and inspections. The contractor pulls the permit from the building department for the address (the City of Sacramento, Sacramento County for unincorporated areas such as Carmichael and Fair Oaks, or the city, such as Roseville or Elk Grove) and coordinates the inspections.
- Commissioning, not just start-up. Every refrigerant circuit is pressure tested, evacuated and charged to the manufacturer's specifications, then airflow, charge and backup heat are checked before the system is handed over and the thermostat is walked through.
- A written, itemized scope. The quote names the outdoor unit and the matched indoor coil or air handler by model number, the duct work, the line set, the electrical work, the permit and what is excluded, so it can be compared with any other quote.
How a job runs
Your house and your bills
What you have now, what isn't working, your utility and what you want the new system to do.
Load, ducts and panel
A room-by-room load calculation, a look at the ducts and returns, the electrical panel and where the outdoor unit can go.
Permit, set, braze, test
Permit pulled, old equipment recovered and removed, new units set, lines brazed, pressure-tested and evacuated before charging.
Verified and explained
Airflow, charge and backup heat checked, the ECC-Rater visit for Title 24, and the thermostat set up and walked through.
How pricing and rebates work
The guides explain what moves the price of a heat pump in the Sacramento region, and the cost estimator gives a planning range before anyone visits. The price for a specific home comes in a written quote after the first visit and load calculation, once the ducts, the panel and the outdoor location are known.
SMUD rebate-qualified installations available on request. A SMUD rebate applies to qualifying equipment installed by a participating contractor in the SMUD Contractor Network; eligibility is confirmed per project under SMUD's program rules, and no amount is guaranteed.
Where we serve
Projects run across Sacramento County, south Placer County, east Yolo County and El Dorado Hills. The region splits across three electric utilities, SMUD, PG&E and Roseville Electric, and several permit offices, and the area pages cover how that, the housing and the climate change the work from place to place.
How to ask about a project
Say what heats and cools the house now, what is not working, the ZIP code and your electric utility. For a system that has stopped, say what it is doing and any code on the thermostat. The next step after a request is arranging the first visit.
